Camp 14

Escape from Camp 14: One Man’s Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West

5 stars

Gut wrenching. This novel is all the more powerful because it is non-fiction. It sheds light on the complete darkness of humanity. It is unbelievable what we are willing to do to each other. I found myself horrified and disgusted. The novel isn’t written as a narrative, but rather like a news article. It is obvious that it is written by a journalist. However, that doesn’t detract from the book. In many ways is enriches the story. This style allowed the novel to pull in information that wouldn’t otherwise be available to the reader. This information gives the story much needed context. It’s read by the author and it is readily apparent that he is not a professional narrator. There are times that the reading is broken and disjointed, but it really didn’t bother me much. It seemed to fit the broken and disjointed story that was being told.

This was a great book. I recommend to everyone.
