Butterfly Effect

Even the beat of a butterfly’s wing can change the world…

I look around and see a culture that has fostered fear. We raise our children with paranoid attempts to wrap them in bubble wrap. We harbor delusions that we can protect them from the very world in which they live. We have forgotten the power of the individual to evoke change. But how can that come to past if this generation is only taught to hide? What of integrity? Courage? Hope? These are things that build the shape of history. We must remember that while history is a mighty river and its waters seem to flow with inevitable force; even the smallest pebble changes the ripples upon the water’s surface. Will we continue to raise our children in a culture of fear? If so, these children will never know the power they have over the current. I strive to teach my daughter to think; in hopes that she will never blindly do what she is told. In hopes that she will decide for herself what is right. I teach her to live in an uncertain world with an understanding that mortals are never safe from the world in which they live; but that we can evoke change in this world. I hope that she will have the courage to stand behind her ideals and beliefs in an effort to re-shape this world into a better place. In this way, I hope to be a pebble that mattered. For what stronger influence can we have then the teaching of our children? Through them, we change the world. We can never know what will be expected of our children in their uncertain futures, but we can prepare them that they might face it with integrity and honor. I have faith, not in an almighty divinity, but in the strength of the pebble that is aware of the fullness of its power. Will our children do as they are told? Or will they think, judge and act with a full understanding of the power they wield as individuals? My only fear for the future is that our children will never realize their power because we were afraid to teach them.
